Creatine showing some positive signs

Most people consider creatine to be a dangerous steroid used by bodybuilders and athletes looking to pack on muscle. Creatine is one of the most studied sport supplements today. Thousands of studies have been performed over the past 25 years with minimal side effects or safety issues.

Creatine got a bad rap in the mid 90's when the MLB started cracking down on the use of steroids, numerous baseball player's tested positive for steroids and tried blaming their results on creatine. This is one of the reasons why creatine is so misunderstood.

Creatine is a nitrogenous organic acid that occurs naturally in vertebrates and helps to supply energy to all cells in the body, primarily muscle. This is achieved by increasing the formation of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) Creatine is produced in the human body from amino acids primarily in the liver and kidneys. It is transported in the blood for use by muscles. Approximatlely 95% of the humans body's total creatine is located in the skeletal muscle.

Creatine is mainly found in red meat and fish. However, much of it is destroyed by cooking. It's also
made naturally in the body from L-arginine, L-glycine and L-methionine, amino acids that are principally found in animal protein. Vegetarians have very low levels of creatine and tend to supplement with it daily.

Recent studies have shown creatine to boost brain performance. Researchers believe creatine can improve memory, focus and some believe it may help fight alzheimer's. More studies need to be performed before anyone can be certain.

The future of creatine looks very bright. Alzheimer's patients, children suffering from neuromuscular disorders, multiple sclerosis, congestive heart failure patients, bone density due to aging, surgical recovery, vegetarians and even some cases of depression have found creatine to be safe and effective. These are just a few of the latest breakthroughs due to creatine.
