NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said the league would spend the next few months exploring playoff expansion to 14 or 16 teams. Under the current system, 12 teams make the playoffs — eight division champions and two wild cards in each conference. The new system would eliminate the byes for the top two seeds in the AFC and NFC.
